Class AA Boys
100 Meter Dash
Things were close early and close late, but it was Scott's Carson Brinegar taking the win in 11.20 with
Fairmont Senior's Trey Longwell close behind in 11.24. Bluefield's Amir Hairston was a close 3rd
in 11.30. Weir's Jamari Hubbard-Bass joined them under 11.50 with an 11.46 for 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 7 of 8.
200 Meter Dash
Keyser's Keith Lawrence got out really well and led out of the turn. Scott's Carson Brinegar
pulled even with him and perhaps took the lead, but it was Lawrence with the extreme lean getting the win by just
0.01 in 23.11. Brinegar was 2nd in 23.12. Berkeley Springs' Ben Golden grabs a surprise 3rd in 23.55.
Poca's Preston Bonnett and Amir Hairston were separated by less than 0.01 in tatking 4th and
5th with both recording a 23.73.
RunWV's Current Score: 13 of 16.
400 Meter Dash
Keyser's Keith Lawrence went out hard and had a sizable lead at 200 meters. He still led coming out of the turn,
but competitors were closing. Fairmont Senior's Grant Broadhurst took the lead with about 20 meters to go and took
the win in 51.42. And coming up on the inside was Point Pleasant's Cooper Tatterson who had an exceptional close
that saw him climb from 7th to 2nd in the final 100 meters and finish in 51.52. Lawrence held onto 3rd in 51.80, just holding
off Oak Glen's Isaiah Franklin. Frankfort's Levi Sgaggero was 5th in 52.06, and Bluefield's Hank Marson
won the 1st heat was also under 52.50, snagging 6th in 52.45.
RunWV's Current Score: 19 of 24.
800 Meter Run
PikeView's Braden Ward lead the field out of the break and led most of the first lap before Winfield's Brayden
Marshall moved to the front late in the 1st lap. Marshall led the field throught the lap in 57. Ward was in 2nd and
Berkeley Springs' Jackson Mundey was in 3rd, also at 57. Lewis' Slate Swiger was in 4th with Winfield's
Justin Lipscomb in 5th, and Shady Springs' Jaedan Holstein in 6th, each at 58. Fairmont Senior's Griffin
Thomas was in 7th at 59 with Frankfort's Garrett Ferguson in 8th at the same time. In the turn, Mundey moved
into 2nd. With 300 to go, Swiger accelerated and moved up to 3rd and started to challenge for 2nd. With about 270 to go,
Holstein started moving up. Swiger would complete the pass into 2nd with 220 to go. Holstein was moving up to 4th now.
Holstein continued to charge, moving into 3rd as they entered the turn. He pulled even with Swiger at about 150 to go and
went on by. He drew even with Marshall as they exited the turn. Holstein and Marshall would battle down the stretch, but
it was the lengthy Holstein proving to have the better kick and taking the win in 1:57.25. It was a close finish as the
top 4 were all under 1:58. Marshall held the 2nd spot at 1:57.67. Swiger was 3rd in 1:57.78, and Mundey 4th in 1:57.82.
Lipscomb too the 5th spot in 1:58.72 with Ward just holding off Ferguson for 6th, 1:59.55 to 1:59.58. Poca's Landon
Brumfield made a couple late passes to snag the 8th spot in 2:01.66.
RunWV's Current Score: 25 of 32.
1600 Meter Run
The field went out aggressively with Winfield's Brayden Marshall leading them out of the break. Marshall would lead
them through the first lap in a really quick 1:00. Lewis' Slate Swiger was in 2nd at 1:01 with Winfield's Justin
Lipscomb right behind him at that time time. Poca's Landon Brumfield was in 4th at 1:02. Frankfort's Garrett
Ferguson was in 5th at 1:03 with teammate Steven Kent Niland in 6th at the same time. Herbert Hoover's John
Duvall was in 7th at 1:04. I'm not sure who was in 8th. I think it was Shady Spring's Bo Huffman. Marshall
started generating a gap on lap 2 as he came through in 2:06. Swiger remained in 2nd at 2:08 with Lipscomb still in 3rd,
also at 2:09. Niland was in 4th at 2:11 with Ferguson in 5th and Brumfield in 6th at the same time. Duvall remained in 7th
at 2:13. I think it was Huffman still in 8th at 2:15. On lap 3, Marshall continued to lead the field, coming through at
3:12. Swiger and Lipscomb were still in 2nd and 3rd with both at 3:15. Ferguson had moved into 4th at 3:18 with Niland in
5th at 3:19. Brumfield was in 6th at 3:21 with Duvall in 7th at 3:24. Frankfort's Luke Duncan had moved into 8th
at 3:28. On the final lap, Marshall wasn't really challenged. He won by 2 seconds in 4:16.35 which is the 2nd Best
All-Time Class AA State Meet Performance. Lipscomb held onto the 2nd spot in 4:18.35 which is the 6th Best All-Time
Class AA State Meet Performance. Ferguson made a huge move on the final lap and challenged for 2nd, but Lipscomb was
able to fend him off. Ferguson finished 3rd in 4:18.88 which is the 3rd Best All-Time Class AA State Meet Performance.
3 of the top 7 all time in this race. Swiger held the 4th spot in 4:23.89. Niland was solidly in the 5th spot in 4:26.46.
Brumfield held the 6th position in 4:28.68. Duvall kept 7th in 4:30.33. Duncan kept the 8th spot in 4:38.11.
RunWV's Current Score: 33 of 40.
3200 Meter Run
Winfield's Brayden Marshall went out hard and led the field out of the break and through the 1st lap in 1:05. Poca's
Landon Brumfield was in 2nd at 1:10. Lewis' Slate Swiger in 3rd at 1:11 with Frankfort's Steven Kent Niland
and Garrett Ferguson in 4th and 5th matching that time. Herbert Hoover's John Duvall was in 6th also at 1:11.
Frankfort's Ryan Hughes was in 7th at 1:12. I think it was Weir's Josh Duffy in 8th, also at 1:12. On lap 2,
Marshall pushed his lead to double digits, coming through in 2:14. Niland was in 2nd with Siger 3rd, Ferguson 4th, Brumfield
5th, and Duvall 6th, each at 2:25. Hughes was in 7th at 2:26, and Duffy was in 8th at 2:27. Marshall went through lap 3 in
3:24. Ferguson was in 2nd with Niland right at his side at 3:38. Swiger was in 4th at 3:39 with Duvall in 5th and Brumfield
in 6th at the same time. Hughes was in 7th at 3:40, and Duffy remained in 8th at 3:42. Marshall hit half-way at 4:35. Niland
was in 2nd at 4:51 with Ferguson in 3rd also at 4:51. Swiger was in 4th at 4:52 with Duvall matching that time in 5th.
Brumfield was in 6th at 4:53. Hughes was in 7th at 4:56 with Duffy in 8th at 4:58. Marshall completed lap 5 at 5:48. Ferguson
was back up to 2nd at 6:05 with Niland and Swiger matching that time in 3rd and 4th. Duvall was in 5th at 6:06. Brumfield
was in 6th at 6:09. Hughes was in 7th at 6:13 with Duffy in 8th at 6:14. After 6 laps, Marshall was at 7:00. Ferguson
was in 2nd with Swiger 3rd and Niland 4th with each at 7:18. Duvall was in 5th at 7:20. Brumfield was still in 6th at 7:28.
Hughes was in 7th at 7:33, and Oak Glen's Nick Gallo had moved into 8th, also at 7:33. At the bell, Marshall was at
8:12. Ferguson had taken control of 2nd at 8:26. Swiger was in 3rd at 8:30 with Niland in 4th at 8:31. Duvall was in 5th
at 8:36. I think Gallo was up to 6th at 8:49 with Hughes in 7th at 8:50, and I think Brumfield was in 8th at 8:51. On the
final lap, Marshall cruised to the win in 9:21.84 which is the 8th Best All-Time Class AA State Meet Performance.
Ferguson continued to close and finished 2nd in 9:32.10. Swiger and Niland had a battle to the finish with Swiger coming
out on top in 9:36.15 to Niland's 9:36.59. Duvall easily kept the 5th spot in 9:50.51. Gallo pulled away for the 6th spot
in 9:58.52. Hughes kept the 7th spot in 10:05.01 with Duffy re-taking the 8th position in 10:06.91.
RunWV's Current Score: 39 of 48.
110 Meter High Hurdles
Point Pleasant's Ian Wood took over the lead shortly before the midway point and pulled away for the win in 15.17.
Shady Spring's Hunter Davis ran a clean race for 2nd in 15.54. Robert C. Byrd's Quentin Cooley was solid for
3rd in 15.90. Keyser's Gavin Salesky got an excellent start and held on for 4th in 16.02. Roane's Lane Watson
was the only other one under 16.40 with a 16.11.
RunWV's Current Score: 46 of 56.
300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
Roane's Lane Watson, after watching his older brother get nailed for a false start, took the lead by hurdle 2 and held
it throughout, taking the win in 40.61. Point Pleasant's Ian Wood tried to make a comeback but ran out of room, finishing
2nd in 40.76. Robert C. Byrd's Quentin Cooley was a solid 3rd in 41.10. Keyser's Collin Salesky was 4th in
41.75. The next 3 spots game from Heat 1 and were the only other ones under 42.50. Point Pleasant's Grant Barton
was 5th in 42.02. Lewis' Aymeric Grymonpre closed really well to get 6th in 42.11, and Winfield's Myles Gurnee
was 7th in 42.48. This was a disaster event for me with only 4 of my predicted 8 placing.
RunWV's Current Score: 50 of 64.
4x100 Meter Relay
The Weir group of Kanye Green, Jamari Hubbard-Bass, Jacob Taylor, and Devan Colson took care of business, taking the
win in 44.54. Scott ran very well for 2nd in 44.81. Fairmont Senior scored 3rd in 45.55. Point Pleasant nabbed 4th from
the 1st heat in 45.85. Keyser was also under 46 seconds in 5th with a 45.91.
RunWV's Current Score: 55 of 72.
4x200 Meter Relay
The Weir unit of Jamari Hubbard-Bass, Max Maley, Jacob Taylor, and Devan Colson held off the late push of Keyser
to take the win in 1:32.91. Keyser suffered a poor hand-off that put them in a hole that they couldn't quite escape in
taking a solid 2nd in 1:33.02. Frankfort scored 3rd in 1:34.52 with Point Pleasant in 1:34.96 edging Lincoln's 1:34.99
for 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 62 of 80.
4x400 Meter Relay
Things were tight through the 1st leg with Lincoln, Keyser, Winfield, and Berkeley Springs handing off nearly simultaneously.
Winfield led out of the break. At the end of the 2nd leg, Winfield was in the front at 1:48 with that matched by Fairmont
Senior in 2nd. Keyser was in 3rd at 1:49. Lincoln was in 4th with Frankfort in 5th at 1:50. Berkeley Springs was in 6th.
Fairmont Senior took the lead on leg 3 at 2:43 with Frankfort also at 2:43. Winfield was in 3rd at 2:44 with Keyser in 4th
and Lincoln in 5th at 2:45. Berkeley Springs was in 6th at 2:46. On the final leg, Fairmont Senior and Frankfort were doing
battle on the backstretch. Frankfort went for the pass on the backstretch and somehow got to the inside of Fairmont Senior
and completed the move. Keyser made the pass on Winfield to move into 3rd with about 250 meters to go. Frankfort would hold
the lead through the turn but Fairmont Senior started to pull even coming out of the turn. Keyser was closing that gap.
Fairmont Senior and Frankfort were running side-by-side pretty much the entire homestretch...but they left a little room,
and Keyser's Keith Lawrence shot between them with 5 meters to go and the foursome of Jack Stanislawczyk, Edan Parks, Griffin Paugh, and
Keith Lawrence stole the victory (and a team spot on the podium) in 3:36.19. Fairmont Senior got the 2nd spot in 3:36.49
with Frankfort in 3rd in 3:36.54. PikeView scored the 4th position from Heat 1 in 3:37.90. Lincoln got by Winfield for
5th in 3:38.05 with Winfield 6th in 3:38.35. Poca grabbed 7th from Heat 1 in 3:38.77, and Berkeley Springs was 8th in 3:40.26.
RunWV's Current Score: 69 of 88.
4x800 Meter Relay
Winfield got things out to a quick start with a 2:00 leg from Justin Lipscomb. Frankfort was in 2nd at 2:04.
I think it was East Fairmont in 3rd at 2:05 and PikeView in 4th in 2:06. Frankfort responded with a sub-1:59 leg from
Garrett Ferguson to take the lead at 4:03. Winfield was right behind in 4:04. I think it was PikeView in 3rd at 4:12
with Keyser rising to 4th in 4:13, Fairmont Senior at 4:15, Weir at 4:16, East Fairmont at 4:19, and Nicholas rounding
out the top 8. After 3 legs, Winfield was back in front, taking the lead back on the backstretch, at 6:07. Frankfort
remained solidly in 2nd at 6:11. PikeView had taken control of 3rd at 6:17. Weir was in 4th at 6:26 with Keyser in 5th
at 6:27, and Fairmont Senior in 6th at 6:28, East Fairmont in 7th at 6:31, and Nicholas in 8th at 6:37. On the final leg,
Winfield left no doubt with Brayden Marshall dropping a 1:55.2 leg to close it out in 8:03.40 for the foursome of
Justin Lipscomb, Landen Bach, Adam Criser, and Brayden Marshall. That gives that group the 3rd Best All-Time
Class AA State Meet Performance. Frankfort held the 2nd spot at 8:13.56, and PikeView
got a sub-2:00 leg from Braden Ward to wrap up 3rd in 8:16.91. Fairmont Senior came up to 4th in a tight finish with
an 8:32.30. Weir held the 5th spot in 8:32.87, and Keyser was 6th in 8:33.45. East Fairmont was all alone in 7th in
8:41.82, and Nicholas kept the final spot in 8:50.91. One of my placers got hit with a DQ.
RunWV's Current Score: 76 of 96.
Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Point Pleasant got out well and led throughout with the unit of Reece Hunt, Joseph Pinkerton, Grant Barton, and Ian
Wood the win by over 1.5 seconds in 58.47. Keyser just missed going under 60 seconds with their 1:00.02. Roane was
a very close 3rd in 1:00.22. Weir was the only other team to go under 1:02 with a 1:01.70. Lincoln and Winfield just missed
with 1:02.04 and 1:02.07, respectively.
RunWV's Current Score: 82 of 104.
High Jump
Westside's Owen Keeney was the ony jumper to clear 6'6, getting that mark on his 2nd attempt to take the title.
Nicholas' Isaiah Miner was the only other one to clear 6'4 in taking 2nd. Point Pleasant picked up a big 3rd
from Cooper Tatterson who cleared 6'2 on his 2nd attempt to take 3rd. Shady Spring's Michael Vecellio
also cleared 6'2, but on his 3rd attempt to take 4th. Fairmont Senior's Nate Flower, Winfield's Aiden Hernandez,
and Poca's Peyton Cook each cleared 6'0 in taking the next 3 spots.
RunWV's Current Score: 89 of 112.
Pole Vault
Winfield's Cristian Penaloza sailed over 13'6 on his 1st attempt to score the win. Berkeley Springs' Dakota
Hamrick cleared 13'0 for 2nd place. Roane's John Bowen cleared 12'6 for 3rd. Keyser's Griffin Paugh
was the only other vaulter to go higher than 11'0, taking 4th with a 12'0 vault.
RunWV's Current Score: 97 of 120.
Long Jump
Philip Barbour's Richard Webster went 21'0.50 on his first jump, and no one was able to come close to it over the
remainder of the competition. It only takes one good jump, proven by 2nd place Logan Murray of Oak Glen. He went
20'1 on his 2nd attempt while fouling on his other 5 attempts. Fairmont Senior's Cannon Dinger also had his top
jump on his 1st attempt with a 19'11.75 jump for 3rd. Westside's Owen Keeney went 19'9.75 for 4th. Robert C. Byrd's
Quentin Cooley went 19'8 for 5th with Winfield's Luke Davis getting a 19'7.25 for 6th. Poca's Landon
Coleman was the only finalist to have his best jump on his first attempt, and it moved him up a spot to 7th at 19'6.50.
Fairmont Senior's Tayvion Thornton went 19'5.75 for 8th. My good fortune in the long jump ended here with only 4
correct picks.
RunWV's Current Score: 101 of 128.
Shot Put
Poca's Anthony Dunbar threw 55'3 on his final attempt to leapfrog his way into 1st place. Keyser's Gabriel Ryan
threw had one chance to top it and was unable to do so. His 54'4.25 stands as a strong 2nd. Point Pleasant's Cody Shultz
only had one legal throw in the competition, but it went 52'7, good for 3rd place. East Fairmont's Dakota Dammeyer joined
them over 50' feet with a toss of 50'3.50 for 4th. Poca's Anthony Belcher also only had one legal throw, that being his
first, but it went 48'11, good enough for 5th. Nicholas' Roman Milam was the only other one over 46'0 with his toss of
47'6.75 for 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 107 of 136.
Discus
Point Pleasant's Cody Schultz repeated as champion. He had 5 legal throws, and all 5 were better than anyone else's
best. His top throw was 176'10. East Fairmont's Dakota Dammeyer got a big 164'9 throw on his final attempt to jump from
3rd to 2nd. Point Pleasant's Caden Hill was 3rd with a toss of 162'4. Poca's Anthony Belcher jumped from 7th
to 4th on his final throw of 151'8. Poca's Anthony Dunbar threw 151'0 for 5th. Herbert Hoover's Josh Stewart
threw 149'11 for 6th, just outdistancing Weir's Dom Guiddy, who was 7th with a 149'7.
RunWV's Current Score: 114 of 144.
The final score of 114 of 144 means that 79.2% of the people picked to place did indeed place. Not a great showing. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
